Joe Milton III was a late addition to the Tennessee roster this offseason, but he wasted no time impressing first-year coach Josh Heupel.

In fact, when the Vols kick off the season on Thursday night against Bowling Green, the Michigan transfer will be Tennessee’s QB1.

So, what did Heupel see in Milton and how did he get him to Knoxville? Heupel discussed that during his weekly radio show this week (via 247Sports):

“Once we found out that he was entering the portal, were able to connect with him,” Heupel said during “Vol Calls” on Monday night. “Had conversations about where we’re at, Tennessee football, where it’s moving, the culture that we’re going to try to create. Offensively, certainly what we’ve done in the past, the success that we’ve had with previous quarterbacks, the ability to flip, offensively, numbers from one year to the next and how we felt like he had an opportunity to come in, compete and earn the starting job and some of his gifts, how we would use those to our advantage offensively.”

Clearly, the recruiting pitch worked. Now, Milton will show what he can do against Bowling Green. Will he be the next quarterback to put up big numbers under Heupel?
