Bru McCoy has had a topsy turvy offseason, and the recent news from the NCAA to clear his eligibility allowed him to play in Thursday’s season opener against Ball State.
McCoy caught 3 passes for 42 yards in the 59-10 win for the Vols. After the game, coach Josh Heupel reacted to McCoy’s performance.
“I thought Bru, it being the first ball game and his first year in this offense, you didn’t notice anything. He played really clean,” Heupel said. “Functioned and operated really well within our tempo. I thought he showed some things as far as the ball in his hands, being physical after contact. That’s one of the things … performing at a really high level. We had a bunch of wide outs that did some things tonight.”
McCoy is a former 5-star prospect and the No. 10 overall prospect in the Class of 2019 by the 247Sports Composite. In 6 games during the 2020 season, McCoy caught 21 passes for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns.
