Julio Jones contends he would have never held out for training camp over contract disputes.
“I was already going to come here,” Jones said. “They took care of it. We knew all along we was going to get it handled. I talked to Mr. (Arthur) Blank (the Falcons’ owner), too, as well yesterday, and then reiterated what he had told us — I’m going to be a Falcon forever. Things like that. So that’s it. It’s not that much to talk about far as that. It was a lot of he say, she say, this and that way. But it never came from my mouth, never came from (coach) Dan Quinn’s mouth.”
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Falcons gave Jones a $4.4 million signing bonus. Now, the signing bonus isn’t giving Jones more money, but rather, it reduces his salaries by $1.5 million this year and by $2.9 million next year. So, he just picked up the money quicker. It’s spread out over the next 17 weeks.
So, what happens next year? It remains to be seen whether the Falcons and Jones will have contract disputes again in 2019, but for 2018, Jones proves that leverage does certainly work.
Julio Jones' revised deal will net him an additional $2.9 million in '18. He received a $4.4 million signing bonus and lowered his base salary from $10.5 million to $9 million, per sources Bottom line: Jones will make $13.4 million instead of $10.5 million this season.
