Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase discuss LSU’s status as ‘WRU’: ‘Proof is in the pudding’
Ahead of their head-to-head Week 3 matchup, the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson and the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase sat down with ESPN’s Randy Moss to discuss a myriad of topics, including LSU‘s status as ‘Wide Receiver University’ among the football community.
During the interview, Jefferson and Chase talked about how the “proof is in the pudding” when it comes to the school’s status as WRU, citing not only their success in college and the pros but also those who came before them.
As two of the players who strongly bolstered the Bayou Bengals’ reputation for receivers, Jefferson and Chase have become the modern-day faces of LSU’s pass-catching lineage. It’s safe to say that the duo has taken that mantle from Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, who carried the torch for much of the mid-to-late 2010s.
Of course, more recent prospects like the Jaguars’ Brian Thomas Jr. and the Giants’ Malik Nabers have only strengthened the Tigers’ stranglehold on the ‘WRU’ label due to their early success. Ohio State certainly has a fair claim to the title, but some of the Buckeyes’ recent talents (Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, etc.) are still waiting to break out in the same way their LSU peers have.
Moss also talked to the duo about how each of them are adjusting to having new starting quarterbacks due to injury.
“We’ve tried to make it a point to say that there isn’t just one quarterback that can make this boat float,” Jefferson said. “But it’s an adjustment, because they don’t know how you run your routes and your tendencies.”
“My thing is just to make sure that Jake [Browning] comes out playing with confidence and fire,” Chase said. “Because in the past games when he did step in, we lit it up a bit.”
