Outside of one throw, Kellen Mond played about as well as possible to open the season in Texas A&M’s season-opening 41-7 win over Texas State Thursday night. While his head coach has a reputation for being tough on his signal-callers, even Jimbo Fisher couldn’t help but marvel at Mond’s first performance of the season.

Mond completed 19 of 27 throws, some of which were jaw-dropping, for 194 yards and three touchdowns with one goal line interception.

During his postgame press conference, Fisher didn’t attempt to hide his praise for the junior quarterback’s first performance in Texas A&M’s opener.

Here is what Fisher had to say when asked about Mond’s progression heading into Year 2 of the system.

“Oh, it’s not even close. There’s so many things,” Fisher said. “When you call the game, what he sees, what he does. Where he was getting two on reads today, I mean, and seeing things and getting there easily and the accuracy of the deep ball and down the field which he always, you know, wasn’t consistent enough in the past. I mean, I think he’s really in a good place right now. I really do. Command of things is really good. I mean, he totally understands what’s going on.”

Following Fisher’s comments, Mond was asked to grade his performance after the game.

“I thought it was really good. And like I said before, I felt like the receivers, we’re all on the same page and, you know, we rep these plays and we know exactly what they’re going to run,” Mond said. “They didn’t show that much on the defensive side tonight but pretty much on everything we know exactly how, you know, the receivers are going to adjust to it, whether they’re going to keep a high on a flag route, break it off, so just a lot of adjustments on this offense. And I feel like, you know, I was able to trust my receivers and they did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

The Aggie offense will look to continue that momentum next week on the road at Clemson, the nation’s No. 1 ranked team entering the season.
