Wildcats’ true freshmen continue to over-achieve on offense

The Kentucky Wildcats are closing in on what would be their first SEC victory since 2011, and they are relying heavily on their true freshmen once again Saturday against Vanderbilt.
The Cats’ offense had been dependent on true freshmen in each of Kentucky’s first three games, and the same has held true Saturday. Kentucky’s freshmen already have 127 yards of total offense on the afternoon, while Vandy’s entire team has just 114 yards to this point. Six UK freshmen have combined to touch the ball 18 times. Two of UK’s three leading rushers and the team’s leading receiver against Vandy are all true freshmen.
Stanley “Boom” Williams has carried the ball four times for 21 yards, and leads the team with three catches for 39 yards. Tailback Mikel Horton is second on the team with five carries for 31 yards. Four freshmen wideouts (T.V. Williams, Dorian Baker, Garrett Johnson and Charles Walker) have combined to catch six passes for 36 yards.
None of the aforementioned players even had a valid driver’s license the last time Kentucky won a conference game. The Kentucky football program is growing up right before our eyes, and for fans in the Bluegrass that is a very promising sign for both the present and the future.
