Buried and left for dead in early September, Kevin Sumlin has helped lead Texas A&M to a 4-1 record heading into its home date against Alabama. If the Aggies somehow manage to pull the upset of the college football season, Sumlin may very well land himself an extension in College Station.

Who would have seen that one coming?

During his appearance on the SEC’s weekly Coaches Teleconference, Sumlin previewed his team’s upcoming game against the #1 team in the nation.

Here’s a summary of what the Texas A&M coach had to say:

  • “Huge challenge this week obviously. We will need the fans to help us, which they did last week. They gave us a lot of energy.”
  • Thoughts on Alabama destroying SEC opponents? “I don’t know how to answer that. I think it says a lot about Alabama.”
  • Jalen Hurts says A&M recruited him, what do you remember about that? “I knew his father for a long time, going back to my time at Houston. I had a relationship with his family. I wasn’t surprised by his success. He’s much stronger than people think. His success is no surprise to us.”
  • What impresses you most about Alabama? “The players and the depth. They can play the run with just the just the front seven. They can run it but have good skill on the outside. Put Jalen in position to succeed.”
  • How has Jalen Hurts improved the most this year? “He’s done a great job of taking care of the ball, I don’t think they have turned the ball over yet.
  • How did the homefield affect the South Carolina game? “I thought the crowd was excellent in the second half. Our players noticed it. We need to give our fans a reason to do that. I think our defense at home, really liked the energy that was in the stadium and it posed some issues for our opponent. Hopefully that will continue.”
