The Auburn Tigers have high expectations heading into the 2021-22 season. After a 1-year, self-imposed postseason ban last year, the Tigers have reloaded and look like a team that can challenge for a top 3 spot in the SEC.
However, they’ll have to make it through most of the nonconference season without a key player, it seems.
On Tuesday, the Tigers announced that guard Allen Flanigan had undergone Achilles surgery on Friday after suffering a non-basketball-related injury. Coach Bruce Pearl issued a statement (via a release from the school):
“Allen is one of our top players and top players in the SEC,” Pearl said. “I’m disappointed for him but know he will do everything in his power to get back and lead us this season.”
Flanigan is expected to be out 12-14 weeks, which would rule him out for most of nonconference play. He said he’ll work hard to come back stronger than ever:
“It’s an unfortunate situation, but I trust that God has a plan,” Flanigan said. “I’m going to work hard to get back stronger and better than ever.”
Flanigan averaged 14.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last year, starting all 27 games for Auburn. Auburn’s first game of the season is on Nov. 9 against Morehead State.
