Kirby Smart certainly understands the kind of strength that exists within the SEC, entering his 10th season as a head coach at Georgia after a sustained tenure as an assistant under Nick Saban. Now, Smart is dishing out a serious claim to those who might argue against the validity of the idea of 2 premier conferences in all of college football.

During his appearance at SEC Media Days, Smart was asked about the future of the College Football Playoff and the SEC football schedule. While some might be surprised, Smart acknowledged a preference for the 5+11 model for the Playoff and a 9-game league slate within the SEC.

However, there is one sticking point that Smart believes needs addressing. That is the simple fact that all records based purely on wins and losses are not equal.

“Two conferences are stronger than others, and if you don’t agree with that, then you probably just don’t know college football,” said Kirby Smart.

The other conference in his assessment would certainly have to be the Big Ten, now at 18 teams strong after last year’s long-awaited expansion became official. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey also reminded fans and the media on Monday that the SEC and Big Ten hold joint power on the final decision for the future model of the Playoff.

Ultimately, fans of the ACC and Big 12 are not going to enjoy hearing an SEC head coach boldly proclaim the preeminent power of the 2 super conferences. However, it’s hard to deny the proclamation at this juncture.
