Kirby Smart praises Jake Fromm, talks Jacob Eason injury in postgame press conference
Georgia started the season off strong Saturday night in Athens, earning an easy 31-10 win that wasn’t even as close as the wide margin might suggest. The big news of the game was the loss of sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason. He left the game early in the first quarter and never returned.
In Eason’s place, true freshman Jake Fromm stepped in and played very well considering it was his first college game of his career. While the offense leaned heavily on the running game, Fromm completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown.
How the team handles the offense and the quarterback position next week heading into the trip to Notre Dame will be very interesting.
Head coach Kirby Smart addressed the media immediately after the game thanking the fans for their continued support.
“That was a long time coming for our kids,” Smart said. “They’ve worked really hard. We have a lot of respect for Appalachian State. Our team played really hard in the second half. Our kids were persistent. We talked about chopping wood and keeping it going.”

Smart also gave the latest with Eason. Apparently, the team is still waiting for more information before making any kind of declaration moving forward.
Kirby Smart said Jacob Eason has a strained knee and does not know how long he would be out.

“We didn’t have to make a lot of adjusting,” Smart continued. “Jacob and Jake have similar qualities. Jake’s a good player and we’re excited about what he can do. Jake managed the game well. We’ll keep working to get him better.”
While Fromm didn’t light up the stat sheet, it was hard not to come away impressed with his performance. Smart seems to agree with that sentiment.
