Kirby Smart saw a breakout game from Branson Robinson on Saturday, and it was enough to be named among the Players of the Week from the SEC on Monday after he had 12 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown against Auburn.
“He has great burst and acceleration, and he has good toughness,” Smart said at his Monday press conference.
Robinson has already drawn comparisons to a great Georgia running back in Nick Chubb, and nicknames such as “Nick Chubb 2.0” and “Baby Chubb” have surfaced.
“He’s able to do it because of opportunity and he was able to do it because of a really good game plan and our running game and offensive line and their defensive line,” Smart said. “He was given the opportunity to do it and he sees that opportunity. He created that opportunity for himself through his work habits, how hard he’s worked since arriving, but it’s not like he hadn’t been talented the whole time he’s been here. He’s earned the opportunity through the work he’s done and you gain confidence through what you do at practice. He continues to grow and have attention to detail in terms of pickups on checks and protection and protecting the ball and making good run reads and he’s done a lot of those things.”
Smart was also asked about a comparison that Robinson is more of a Thomas Brown-type style than Chubb.
“Branson’s his own person,” Smart said. “Everybody tries to give everybody a style of running back, but I don’t know if you’ve got a large enough body of work to know.”
