Kirby Smart speaks out on College Football Playoff expansion: ‘Everybody loves change’
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart experienced the ultimate high in January, winning his first national title under the 4-team College Football Playoff format. Now with the CFP expanding to 12 teams in a few years, Smart still isn’t sure where he stands on the much-talked-about issue.
Smart spoke about the expansion of the playoff during his Monday news conference, saying he’s one of those few people who hasn’t been outspoken for a particular model. Smart believes this change is ultimately a result of the college football world looking for something different.
โI donโt know how itโll affect Georgia personally,” said Smart. “Iโm hesitant to say I supported it. Wouldnโt say that Iโve been clearly in one camp over the other. I think that thereโs some good and bad to both, and I donโt think we know the repercussions of going to 12 over four.
“Thereโs been some good things about four and thereโll probably be some good things about 12. Itโs just everybody loves change and itโs on a continuum.โ
Smart also figures this won’t be the last change to the playoff system.
โThereโll be somebody complaining about something about 12,” he said. “I donโt really get into whether or not itโs going to be beneficial for us or not because I think itโs year to year on what kind of team you have and how other teams do in the country.”
