Georgia head coach Kirby Smart experienced the ultimate high in January, winning his first national title under the 4-team College Football Playoff format. Now with the CFP expanding to 12 teams in a few years, Smart still isn’t sure where he stands on the much-talked-about issue.

Smart spoke about the expansion of the playoff during his Monday news conference, saying he’s one of those few people who hasn’t been outspoken for a particular model. Smart believes this change is ultimately a result of the college football world looking for something different.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how itโ€™ll affect Georgia personally,” said Smart. “Iโ€™m hesitant to say I supported it. Wouldnโ€™t say that Iโ€™ve been clearly in one camp over the other. I think that thereโ€™s some good and bad to both, and I donโ€™t think we know the repercussions of going to 12 over four.

“Thereโ€™s been some good things about four and thereโ€™ll probably be some good things about 12. Itโ€™s just everybody loves change and itโ€™s on a continuum.โ€

Smart also figures this won’t be the last change to the playoff system.

โ€œThereโ€™ll be somebody complaining about something about 12,” he said. “I donโ€™t really get into whether or not itโ€™s going to be beneficial for us or not because I think itโ€™s year to year on what kind of team you have and how other teams do in the country.”
