Kirk Herbstreit is high on Miami Hurricanes QB D’Eriq King heading into the 2021 season.

“He could be the face of the sport this year,” Herbstreit recently said on the Tobin and Leroy Show on 790 The Ticket, per 247Sports. “He is everything that is right about the game. I feel like because he has solidified that position at quarterback, it not only impacts the offense, but also the defense and the belief of an entire team that we can win this game today.”

King has been in college football since 2016. The former high school teammate of Kyle Trask signed with Houston. In 2019, King opted to redshirt after playing in four games. During that 2019 season, he broke Tim Tebow’s record for most consecutive games (15) with both a rushing and passing touchdown. After entering the transfer portal, King enrolled at Miami in January of 2020.

King, who is coming off of an ACL injury, is looking to build on an impressive 2020 season in which he posted a 64.1 completion percentage passing for 2,686 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 538 yards and 4 TDs. King is taking advantage of the NCAA’s extra year of eligibility to play a sixth season of college football.

Herbstreit recognizes that the face of CFB faces a tough start to the season. King’s Canes face defending national champion Alabama in 2021. The Crimson Tide’s high-powered offense led the way in 2020 but Herbstreit expects Nick Saban’s squad to be strong on defense this season.

“We live in an offensive era, but if you are not familiar with Alabama in 2021, they are going to be back to being a dominant defense,” Herbstreit said. “They will figure things out offensively [as the season progresses]. It might be a work in progress on that side of the ball, but D’Eriq and the Canes will be going against the best defense in the country and that is a tough way to start.”
