KJ Jefferson had many of his former Arkansas fans concerned when a screenshot of a Fayetteville mugshot with Wednesday’s date started making the rounds on social media.

While mugshots raise concern, Jefferson’s legal issue appears to be minor. Jefferson took to his Instagram account to explain that he was back in Fayetteville to address a speeding incident.

“I got a speeding ticket last year in May before the season, so I reported to court today,” Jefferson said in a video post. “I ended up getting three days of community service. That’s why you’ve seen my mugshot [on social media]; I don’t know why they did that for community service.

“I take full accountability for my actions. All the narratives everyone is playing are not true. I had a speeding ticket.”

Jefferson’s speeding incident was on May 18, 2023. Per the Orlando Sentinel, Jefferson was found to be driving 100 miles per hour in a 70-mph zone. Since he was driving more than 20 miles over the limit, he received a reckless driving charge.

The 2023 season was Jefferson’s fifth and final at Arkansas. He completed 64.2% of his passes for 2,107 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, adding 161 carries for 447 yards and 2 scores on the ground.

Jefferson spent 5 seasons at Arkansas, using a redshirt. The NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver allows him to play in 2024, which he will use at UCF.

Knights coach Gus Malzahn put out a statement praising Jefferson’s conduct and leadership since transferring to UCF.

Jefferson will face at least one familiar foe with his new team in 2024. UCF travels to Gainesville to play Florida on Oct. 5. Jefferson led the Razorbacks to an upset of the Gators in The Swamp last season.
