Lane Kiffin continues to discuss the quarterback competition as the Rebels get set to play Central Arkansas this week.

At his Monday press conference, Kiffin said that Luke Altmyer will be the first QB out there on Saturday, and on the Wednesday SEC coaches media teleconference, Kiffin shared what he sees about the impact of the situation.

“It makes guys competitive,” Kiffin said. “They need to keep working. Obviously, I’m not going to say it’s the best thing. … But it is what it is. We’ve got to find the best guy.”

Altmyer, a Starkville, Mississippi native, played parts of 3 drives in the win over Troy on Saturday after Jaxson Dart got the start last week. Dart was 18 for 27 passing for 154 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He was replaced by Altmyer in the fourth quarter, who completed one pass for 13 yards. Dart ran the ball 4 times for 40 yards and Altmyer never rushed.

Earlier in the week, Kiffin said the Rebels would always like to have it figured out.

“This is not ideal,” he said. “Luke Altmyer will go first in this game. So that gives both guys an opportunity to go first. We’ll see how he plays. He didn’t get as many opportunities as he would’ve liked, obviously we’d like to see the series go further. Then Jaxson Dart’s interception, we were going to switch after that series. But as you know, I take a lot into the psyche of the quarterback, and we didn’t want his last play to be an interception, so that ate up one of Luke’s series.”
