Lane Kiffin says it’s ‘obvious’ teams aren’t abiding by new revenue-sharing cap

Lane Kiffin used his platform on the first day of SEC Media Days in Atlanta to address something that has nothing to do with anything that happens between the lines.

The fiery Ole Miss head coach had plenty to say about those subjects, too, but he took the time to share his thoughts on how other programs are treating the new revenue-sharing cap in college football. From Kiffin’s view, they aren’t treating it very well, or even close to well enough, and he wasn’t going to let his time at Media Days go by without speaking out on the important issue.

“I think we’ve done a good job of putting together this roster, working within this cap. I think if you go back to retention of last year’s players and then the portal guys, we went into that operating under this cap because we were told this settlement was most likely to get approved and how that would work. We get a lot of questions about ‘what’s it like now?’ We’ve been operating under these cap guidelines of what was coming and what it would look like,” explained Lane Kiffin to reporters in Atlanta on Monday.

Unfortunately, Kiffin believes other programs are not abiding by the new system quite yet, saying it is “obvious” some programs are skirting the cap. That raises questions of what punishment and enforcement will look like, but he’s hoping Ole Miss will see some benefit from following the rules.

“I think we’ve done a really good job of that. It obviously means you can’t sign as many players as you like at times because you have a budget. We’re obviously hopeful that that will be rewarded by doing that. I think it’s obvious people aren’t staying within that cap,” said Kiffin. “I think the whole thing will be what does that look like, what does it look like when you don’t, and what are the punishments for that? You win and then that (punishment) comes later? That remains to be seen.”

It also remains to be seen how other programs treat the cap as time moves forward, or if Kiffin’s initial take on Monday continues to hold water.
