FootballScoop.com has been a valuable source of information during this season’s coaching carousel, and continues to be just that when it comes to updates with Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and his possible suitors.
Last night, sources told the website that Tim Drevno, Michigan’s offensive coordinator, is a candidate for the FAU head coaching vacancy along with Kiffin and that an announcement “could” come in the next day or two.
What’s interesting is the connection between Drevno and Kiffin, and how the two are competing for the gig in Boca Raton, Fl. As FootballScoop reports, both Kiffin and Drevno’s candidacies are in part thanks to two separate cold wars being fought by the two schools who employ them.
Something many have already speculated: Kiffin’s candidacy at FAU is being pushed supported by Nick Saban, in part so he is not available to become LSU’s offensive coordinator.
But here’s where it gets interesting.
Meanwhile, Drevno, a longtime Harbaugh assistant, has nearly no experience in the state of Florida. In fact, a quick glance at his resume reveals that his time at Michigan is the farthest east he has ever worked. So, how does Tim Drevno get into the mix this deep into FAU’s search?
As a source said to FootballScoop, ‘Drevno is being pushed by Urban Meyer as a means of weakening Michigan’ Meyer and Florida Atlantic AD Pat Chun were colleagues for a brief time at Ohio State before Chun left for FAU. Chun and FAU also hosted a Buckeyes satellite camp last summer.
It looks as if the FAU coaching hire, ironically enough, could have a big impact on some of college football’s goliaths.
