Known as arguably the greatest offensive mind the SEC has ever seen, ironically, Steve Spurrier didn’t win the national title at Florida until he hired an elite defensive mind to pair with his offense. Of course, that assistant was Bob Stoops — who came over from Kansas State and helped Spurrier win the national title in his first season as an assistant in Gainesville.

The decision to hire Stoops was an easy one, however, getting him on the phone and out from under legendary Kansas State coach Bill Snyder would prove to be much more difficult.

During a recent Sirius XM/ESPNU radio appearance, Spurrier recalled the story of his failed attempts to get Stoops on the phone — thanks to Snyder’s interference. According to the former Gator coach, he had to get creative to get Stoops on the phone.
