LOOK: Florida announces Hurricane Harvey awareness helmet decal for Michigan game
The Gators are scheduled to make their way to Dallas Thursday in anticipation for Saturday’s season opener against Michigan in AT&T Stadium. While the team is currently in route, the school made a special announcement Thursday morning — the Gators plan to wear a Hurricane Harvey helmet decal.
The goal of the decal is to bring attention to the thousands currently affected by the natural disaster in Texas and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida head coach Jim McElwain announced the team’s plan to wear the decals Wednesday:
“With what’s going on in the Gulf Coast of Texas, we’re going to have a truck loaded up of things to get down there to give to people who are in a tough bind. To honor them, fans will notice a decal on our helmet moving forward. We understand, living here in Florida, how devastating those things can be. We want to do whatever we can to help, and this is just a small part of that moving forward.”
The school’s AD Scott Stricklin also issued a statement:
“We are very mindful of the damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey and are hopeful that Gators and Wolverines can come together to provide assistance to those who are in need.”
As for the decal itself, here is what the Gators will have on their helmets during the nationally televised game against Michigan:
Florida will wear a helmet decal that features a teardrop with the Texas state flag inside it on Saturday.
