While LSU’s cancelled game will not cost the Tigers a shot at the College Football Playoff, like some oddly argued, it could cost the athletic department millions.

Athletic director Joe Alleva confirmed to The Advocate that Saturday night’s cancellation will cost LSU between $1.2 million and $3.2 million. The costs incurred are $500,000 to McNeese State, as well as personnel such as ushers, police and ticket takers.

The university also announced its intentions of fully refunding tickets to fans who purchased them.

“In the end, we believe that issuing the refund is quite simply the right thing to do in this case,” Alleva said. “We have a plan in place that fairly reimburses fans who purchased tickets through our ticket office.”

Obviously, the SEC, LSU and McNeese State were all heavily involved in the cancellation process, but it makes one wonder why the two teams didn’t at least attempt to play Sunday to recoup some of that lost money.
