There’s an old saying that goes “know your enemy,” and LSU has the next best thing as it prepares to host top-ranked Alabama.

Tigers’ defense line coach Pete Jenkins served on Nick Saban’s LSU staff from 2000-2001 and rejoined the team this season at the request of interim coach Ed Orgeron.

“He has told us about Saban, his practice habits and discipline,” Orgeron said Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the way I will do it.”

Orgeron has described Jenkins, a long-time college and NFL defensive line coach, as one of his closest friends and confidants. That’s why he didn’t hesitate to call up the man to whom he credits much of his success as soon as he was named interim coach.

“Pete is as loyal as a big old bulldog,” Orgeron said. “That guy is my mentor. He is the reason I had success at USC, no question about that. He’s one of the reasons I’m having success here.”
