LSU President William F. Tate is leaving Baton Rouge after 4 years with the Tigers. Now, he will head to the Big Ten for a new presidency role beginning this summer.

After previous reports indicated Tate was leaving, Rutgers officially announced he was accepting the position to become the 22nd president of the university. Tate will begin his new post on July 1, 2025, after previously accepting his role at LSU in May 2021.

During his time in Baton Rouge, Tate oversaw campuses across the state of Louisiana, including over 55,000 students. He leaves one of the prominent programs within the SEC, one of the elite conferences in college athletics, to join Rutgers, who resides in the Big Ten as the other dominant league in college sports.

“I am honored to join the Rutgers family, where the Rutgers Edge is more than a concept. It is reflected in a history of leading with outstanding research, clinical excellence, insightful pedagogy, innovative partnerships and storied athletic feats,” President-designate Tate said. “Together, we have an opportunity to align our efforts and push to greater levels of impact. We can compete and win at new heights if we work together.”

Prior to arriving at LSU, he spent time in a different capacity at South Carolina. Tate holds a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois and received his master’s from the University of Texas at Dallas and a PhD from Maryland.
