Maason Smith, LSU’s standout defensive tackle, exited the Tigers’ season opener on Florida State’s first drive. A new report says Smith will be out for the 2022 season.
Julie Boudwin of TigerDetails on Rivals reports that Smith has torn his ACL, and will miss the remainder of the year. Boudwin adds that Smith is set to have surgery in 3 weeks.
Smith injured himself celebrating a defensive stop in the first quarter of Sunday’s LSU-FSU game. Smith’s injury appears to be due to the way he landed on the Superdome’s turf.

Smith is a big loss for the LSU defense. In 2021, Smith earned Freshman All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) as well as Freshman All-SEC recognition.
Last year, Smith played in 9 games, making 4 starts. He recorded 19 total tackles, including 5 for loss and 4 sacks during LSU’s 2021 season.
