As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the nation, it is having a major financial impact on the world of college sports.

Now, some conferences are having to make drastic changes, including the MAC.

According to a report from WTOL 11, the conference commissioner said the MAC will be cutting postseason tournaments from 8 sports for the next 4 years, at least:

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher confirmed to WTOL that starting in 2021 the conference will be eliminating the postseason tournaments for the following sports:

  • Baseball
  • Softball
  • Men’s Soccer
  • Women’s Soccer
  • Men’s Tennis
  • Women’s Tennis
  • Women’s Lacrosse
  • Field Hockey
  • Women’s Lacrosse

Steinbrecher added that the conference will re-evaluate things in the future as the country emerges from the pandemic:

“The pandemic and resulting financial issues play into that,” said Steinbrecher. “As the financial situation changes, it will give us a chance to re-evaluate.”

Will other conferences follow suit? That remains to be seen, but this could just be the tip of the iceberg.
