Malcolm Simmons scores go-ahead TD late in fourth quarter vs. Oklahoma
After trailing for much of the game, Auburn took a 17-16 lead over Oklahoma on Saturday night in Norman with just over 7 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Tigers got into the end zone thanks to a 4-yard run by receiver Malcolm Simmons. However, it didn’t come without a little bit of controversy — and some good fortune for the Tigers.
Facing a fourth-and-1 in the red zone, Auburn decided to go for it. The Tigers appeared as though they’d be stopped well short of the line to gain, but the play was whistled dead for a false start. Now with another chance on fourth-and-6, Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold chucked up a pass toward Cam Coleman that landed out of bounds. However, Oklahoma was called for pass interference as freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory had a hand in Coleman’s jersey for much of the play.
That first down gave put Auburn back in the driver’s seat and Simmons scored the go-ahead touchdown on the next play:
Both teams have been heavily penalized in this contest. The officials have become part of the story as well — they overturned a would-be Auburn scoop-and-score in the first quarter and then failed to penalize Oklahoma for an apparent hide-out play later in the game.
Auburn is in searching for its first ever win over the Sooners.
