Maurice Smitherman is on the mend following a season-ending injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago, and has already had surgery to repair what coach Joe Moorhead called a lower-body injury.

Smitherman was on crutches before the LSU game on Oct. 19, and it was reported by Gene’s Page that the injury happened in practice earlier that week.

“Surgery was a success,” Smitherman tweeted, “thanking God for this test he about to put me thru… Rock bottom will teach you lesson mountain tops will never.”

Smitherman started the first six games of the season and made 14 tackles. He had a season-high five tackles against Tennessee in what would be his final game as a Bulldog.

Entering this season, Smitherman appeared in 36 contests with two starts and made 34 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups to that point in his career.

Last year he was part of a cornerback duo that did not allow a touchdown during the regular season, and he was targeted 24 times and gave up only 12 receptions, with only one missed tackle that season.
