LSU QB Max Johnson is looking at ways to improve from last season and he told reporters on Monday that communication is one area that he and his teammates can focus on.

Johnson said it’s been pretty good overall, and that it takes time, but also that there’s not a huge difference in language and verbiage with new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz. The left-hander was inserted into the starting lineup against Florida in Week 9 last season, and led the Tigers to back-to-back wins to close out the 2020 season.

“I definitely do feel more mature than I did last year,” he said, per Julia Boudwin. “… I hone in more on the details and how we need to be a better football team.”

On the protection front, offensive guard Ed Ingram agreed with Johnson about creating more comfortable pocket for the QBs.

“We’re just gonna be working on picking up different blitzes and stuff and helping each other pick up line games and creating good pocket presence for the quarterback,” Ingram said. “If you know Max, he’s just a humble guy. … He’s starting to step up into that leadership role, which is good for QB1.”

Meanwhile, RB John Emery is developing more as a receiver, Johnson said.

“John’s done a great job of reading the leverage of the linebackers, and he meets with Coach Faulk all the time just going over the plays and how to get open… and he works on that after practice as well,” Johnson said, per Jerit Roser.
