If Vince McMahon is going to fail in the XFL this time, it won’t be because he was too cheap.
The new league, which is set to launch in February 2020, is going to get quite the financial backing from its leader.
According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, McMahon said that he expects to spend $500 million on the XFL in the league’s first 3 seasons.
McMahon already crossed a financial hurdle by getting the first $100 million from selling part of his WWE stock. That, however, is only the beginning.
Here was what league CEO and commissioner Oliver Luck told ESPN:
“People were focused on the $100 million, but the truth is that doesn’t even get us to the 20-yard line.”
Besides funding injury insurance, a good amount of that money is expected to go to funding the salaries for players and coaches.
That obviously will be a major factor in determining the type of talent the new league attracts. According to Rovell, players made $45,000 in a 10-week season during the first XFL.
Perhaps with McMahon’s financial commitment, that’ll be a significant upgrade to what the league produced the first time around.
