Carson Beck posted solid numbers as the starting quarterback at Georgia the last 2 seasons, with a 24-3 record under center. However, there might be one specific aspect of Miami’s offense that he believes could be better as he prepares to be the Hurricanes’ new QB1.

Keeping Beck upright will play a major role in whether Miami can capture its first ACC Championship. The Canes were close last year, but with Cam Ward departing for the NFL, Beck steps in looking to bridge the gap.

That’s where the offensive line comes in.

Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson believes Beck will have plenty of protection to work with. At a media availability on Thursday, Dawson was effusive in his praise of Miami’s offensive line, which Beck also seemed to beam about.

“We talk about receivers, this and that, I mean, the core of our offense is the 5 guys up front. That’s what makes everything go. If you can’t protect like we can protect… That was one of the things Carson (Beck) said early in camp,” Dawson said. “He said, ‘Man, I’ve got to get used to all this time.’ Those guys do a really good job, which makes your ability to execute higher. Everything builds around them out.”

Dawson added that Miami’s line is the lynch pin for what could be a potent offensive attack.

“Everything they do is the heartbeat of what we do,” Dawson said. “… I’m excited about that group.”

According to PFF, Beck had an average time to throw of 2.52 seconds last season at Georgia, while Ward was at 2.93. Beck regressed last season to pass for 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. So if Dawson ends up correct about Miami’s offensive line prowess, Beck will have the potential for his best season.

Beck will make his debut in a massive opening matchup when No. 10 Miami hosts visiting No. 6 Notre Dame on Aug. 31 (7:30 p.m. ET/ABC).
