In April, Texas A&M was dealt the unfortunate blow that standout linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a serious injury. Sanford’s lower-body injury required surgery, and he will reportedly miss a portion of the season.

Just how much of the season Sanford is the big question. Speaking at a Dallas event, A&M head coach Mike Elko commented on Sanford. Elko didn’t get into many details, but he was notably optimistic in expressing excitement for getting Sanford back in action.

“I’m not going to get into the Daymion Sanford injury. I know that’s the elephant in the room a little bit,” Elko said, per Carter Karels of On3. “We’re confident that we’re going to get Daymion back playing really, really good football this fall.

“But it’s way too early in the process for us to be able to put that down at any level that we want to. But I know a lot of people were praying for him coming out of the spring game. Please continue to do so. We’re hopeful that that recovery goes and the rehab goes the way that we think it can, because if it does, I think he’ll be able to have a really strong year for us.”

Sanford is entering Year 4 with the Aggies. He has played in 39 games with the club, seeing his role steadily increase. Last year, Sanford put up the best numbers of his career with 57 total tackles, including 9.5 for loss with 3.5 sacks. He recorded his first pass breakups (2), interception (1), forced fumbles (2) and fumble recovery (1) in 2025.
