Mixed prognoses for injured Auburn DBs

Auburn’s defense held Texas A&M’s offensive attack to just 10 points in a 26-10 victory on Saturday night, and the Tigers did it without two members of their secondary.

Starting safety Tray Matthews did not play due to an ankle injury, and watched the game in street clothes from the sideline. Then freshman defensive back Jeremiah Dinson suffered a leg injury during the game, and was carted off the field.

On Sunday, the prognoses were mixed for the two injured defensive backs.

Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp said Matthews was limited in practice last week, but told reporters he believes the safety will play this week against Georgia (his former team).

“I think he’ll be fine,” Muschamp said. “Based on tonight, I would think he’d be able to go (against Georgia).”

But Dinson’s injury is more serious.

“He’s (Dinson) out,” Muschamp said. “Gus (Malzahn) will address that more on Tuesday, but he’s definitely out.”

Dinson was on the receiving end of a blindside block by Texas A&M wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones, and had to be carted off the field. Targeting was initially called on the play, but the call was reversed by the replay official.

Muschamp also said that defensive lineman Devaroe Lawrence’s ankle injury was improving. Lawrence played against Texas A&M and had three tackles and a hurry.

“His ankle has bothered him, but he has progressed each week and done very well,” Muschamp said.

Auburn (5-4) will host Georgia (6-3) this Saturday at noon ET.
