Mizzou DC Steve Wilks seems a bit eager to get back to the NFL ranks after only 1 season in Columbia.
Wilks recently interviewed for the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator spot, per a report. Now, he’s reportedly interviewing for an NFL position coach gig.
Per Carolina Panthers insider Joe Person, the Panthers are interviewing Wilks for the open secondary coach position:
Matt Rhule will interview former Panthers DC Steve Wilks for team's secondary coach position, per source.
Wilks had the same job for five years under Ron Rivera before getting promoted to DC. Well-respected coach and CLT native would be a big get for Rhule.— Joe Person (@josephperson) February 9, 2022
Person notes that Wilks has experience in the Charlotte area, even serving as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator in the past.
Wilks worked for the Panthers from 2012 to 2017 before landing the Arizona Cardinals’ head coaching job in 2018. We’ll see if he lands this job, but Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz might want to start working on a backup plan at DC, because it seems Wilks has the itch to return to the NFL.
