NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel announces new rule limiting the number of headsets in 2018

On Friday, the NCAA’s Playing Rules Oversight Panel announced a new rule limiting the number of coaches’ communication devices (headsets) starting this season.
The maximum number is 20 headsets on game days, and the panel was very specific on who can wear them. The coaching staff — head coach, assistants and graduate assistants — gets 15 headsets, while four will be designated for players and the remaining one can be used by someone for noncoaching activities.
The panel explained the rules change “is intended to clarify and limit the maximum number of headsets while still allowing adequate coaching and student-athlete teaching opportunities.”
Headsets used for medical, security and game operations are exempt but must remain separate from coaching communication. Additionally, one communication technician on the sideline and one in the coaching box can listen and monitor the coaches’ headsets to fix any technical issues.
