A big change could be coming to college sports recruiting and the number of official visits a student-athlete can take within a cycle.

The NCAA on Thursday announced that its Division 1 council is proposing dropping the limit of official visits a recruit can make. Currently, a recruit can make up to 5 official visits, while limited to 1 per school. However, if a coaching change occurs following an official visit, a 2nd one would be permitted under the proposal.

“Schools would be permitted to cover travel costs, transportation, meals and reasonable entertainment for up to four individuals accompanying a prospect on their official visit, the NCAA wrote. “Those guests could include family members, their high school or club coach, or any other individual who helps the prospect with the college decision-making process.”

Currently, a school can provide transportation, lodging, meals, and tickets to an on-campus sporting event to “parents” or “guardians”, so the new proposal appears to expand that qualifier.

Per the NCAA, the proposal will go to a vote in January, with “most of the changes” beginning in July.
