Cord Sandberg became Auburn’s newest quarterback when he announced his commitment to the Tigers on Monday.
But when fall camp opened Friday on the Plains, Sandberg wasn’t there in orange and blue. Auburn fans have no need to worry, coach Gus Malzahn revealed Sandberg has a good excuse for his absence.
“His brother is getting married,” Malzahn said of Sandberg. “He will miss today and tomorrow. He’ll be back for our third practice ready to go.”
While there’s no battle for the starting quarterback job this year, Sandberg should provide a boost to AU’s long-term depth at the position. A former 4-star recruit in the class of 2013, Sandberg chose to play minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies organization instead of playing for Dan Mullen at Mississippi State.
Sandberg probably won’t miss much in the first two practices, but he does have all five years of his football eligibility – including a redshirt season – remaining.
