Nick Saban blasts Greg McElroy for starting rumor about return to coaching
Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy put Nick Saban in a tough spot earlier this offseason.
On the first day of SEC Media Days back in July, McElroy said he heard from someone in-the-know that Saban would be interested in a return to the sidelines. That report spread like wildfire and became the basis for an exceptional amount of speculation in the weeks that followed.
Saban himself eventually addressed the report and indicated he’s not eyeing a coaching comeback. But he hadn’t publicly commented on McElroy’s original statement — until today.
The legendary head coach addressed McElroy’s comments at the Nick Saban Legacy Awards ceremony on Monday night.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Saban said, referring to his rumored return. “Greg McElroy played quarterback for us. And if he had done something like that when he was a player, he’d have got his ass kicked.”
Saban cracked a smile after hearing the crowd laugh at his remark.
