Nick Saban has become the greatest college football coach of all-time, but there are some people even the Alabama legend admires.
During a presentation for the “Nick Saban Legacy Award” on Monday, Saban discussed people he has admiration for.
The Alabama coach said sustained success is something he truly has an appreciation for, listing some famous music icons and some sensational athletes (via AL.com):
“Well, look. Anybody in any profession who has had a tremendous amount of success, I have an admiration for that because I know how difficult it is,” Saban began. “I don’t care if it’s in the music industry and you’re the Eagles or Michael Jackson or the Rolling Stones. Those people have been successful for a long, long time. Elton John. So I admire that.
“I admire Kobe Bryant. I admire Michael Jordan — guys who were dominant for a long, long time and they did it on a very consistent basis because some people can be dominant for a little while, but it takes a special someone because it’s not really human nature to try to be the best you can be. It’s human nature to survive.”
Saban says he knows what it takes to sustain success for a long time, so he appreciates seeing that trait in others:
“So when you have somebody who gets to the point where they get to the point where they want to be the best and they can sustain it for a long, long time,” Saban said. “That’s something that I can really have an appreciation and admiration for. The day Kobe came and spent to our team and Michael Jordan spoke to our team. A lot of successful people have come and tried to impact and give our players leadership and direction and how they can sustain their performance.
“I really admire great competitors and I really admire people who are able to sustain success, whether it’s in business, whether it’s in sports or whether it’s in music. It doesn’t matter.”
It’s safe to say Saban’s name will be one many young coaches in college football mention as someone they admire for decades to come.
