Of the most storied rivalries in college football appears close to extinction, as Notre Dame and USC are not scheduled to play each other again in 2026.
The Fighting Irish and Trojans failed to reach a deal to extend their series despite months of negotiations and are working to schedule replacements for 2026 and beyond. The programs released a joint statement confirming the news:
The 2026 contest was to have been the 79th consecutive meeting, excluding the COVID-impacted 2020 season, in a series that began in 1926 and was also paused for 3 years during World War II.
Notre Dame leads the USC series 51-37-5, and the Irish hold a 3-game winning streak. They have played for the Jeweled Shillelagh since 1952.
It was also reported that Notre Dame is finalizing a two-year agreement with BYU to play the Cougars in 2026-27. Next year’s game will be in October in Provo, before a return game the next season in South Bend.
Notre Dame and USC have combined to win 24 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophies (8 for USC and 7 for Notre Dame).
