Social media allows fans to feel closer than ever to their favorite players. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram allow for players to offer a peek into the life of a student-athlete. Players are known to share photos and videos on and off the field, allowing fans to get to know them beyond their jersey numbers. The downside, however, is that social media also allows fans an easy way to send hateful messages and make threats, as Ohio State basketball player E.J. Liddell experienced Friday.
Following OSU’s First Round loss to 15-seed Oral Roberts, Liddell shared that he received messages using explicit language calling him vulgar names, personally attacking him. In the tweeted screenshots, one person threatens to kill Liddell while another says, “I hope you die I really do.”

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf says police have gotten involved.
If there’s one positive to the situation, Liddell has now received an outpouring of support from many prominent social media accounts, including ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.
