Oklahoma’s wide receiver rotation has taken a hit ahead of the 2024 season.

Sooners coach Brent Venables told reporters on Tuesday that Jayden Gibson will not play this year. Gibson reportedly injured his knee in fall camp practices.

Gibson, listed at 6-5, 197 pounds on this year’s roster, was a 4-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class coming out of Winter Garden (Florida) West Orange High School. While the Sooners were counting on Gibson to contribute in 2024, his long-term eligibility is not affected, as he had yet to take a redshirt season in his college career.

As a true freshman in 2022, Gibson made 9 appearances. Primarily a special teams contributor, Gibson recorded 1 reception for 12 yards that fall.

Gibson played in all 13 contests for the Sooners last season, earning his first-career start in the Alamo Bowl against Arizona. He recorded 14 catches for 375 yards and 5 touchdowns on the year. Gibson had a particularly strong finish to the 2023 campaign, scoring in three straight games to end the regular season.

“Jayden Gibson was going to have a big season,” J.J. Hester told Gracie Rawlings of the OU Daily on Tuesday. “Just to see somebody go down like that with such high character is a travesty.”

Per Colton Sulley of The Oklahoman, Venables identified Hester as one of the receivers to step up in Gibson’s absence, along with Ivan Carreon, Zion Ragins and Purdue transfer Deion Burks.

The Sooners open the 2024 season on Aug. 30, a Friday, when they host Temple. Oklahoma’s first four contests are at home, including the SEC opener against Tennessee on Sept. 21, marking Josh Heupel’s much anticipated return to Norman.
