There were some impressive collegiate quarterback performances across the country on Saturday. That made life difficult for the Davey O’Brien Award when selecting its weekly “Great 8” passers. Fortunately, it got the job done, and shouted out 2 SEC signal-callers in the process,
Both Tennessee‘s Joey Aguilar and Texas A&M‘s Marcel Reed made the O’Brien Award’s Week 9 “Great 8” list. BYU’s Bear Bachmeier, Georgia Tech’s Haynes King, Memphis’ Brendon Lewis, North Texas’ Drew Mestemaker, Houston’s Connor Weigman — a former Aggie — and Washington’s Demon Williams Jr. were also selected.
Aguilar responded off a tough road loss at Alabama with a sparkling performance against the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington. He connected on 20-of-26 passes (76.9%) for 396 yards and 3 touchdowns in Tennessee’s 56-34 win. Two of his TD tosses, including his 62-yarder to Mike Matthews, came from more than 30 yards away.

Marcel Reed was not as prolific through the air as Aguilar, but dominated all-around in Texas A&M’s victory over LSU. Reed threw for 202 yards, ran for another 108 yards and tallied 4 total touchdowns as the Aggies pulled away 49-25 in Baton Rouge — at night — and got Brian Kelly fired.
Reed and Texas A&M (8-0, 5-0 SEC) are on bye this week. They’ll return to action against Missouri in Week 11. Meanwhile, Aguilar and Tennessee (6-2, 3-2 SEC) host Oklahoma on Saturday (7:30 p.m. E.T., ABC).
