Paul Finebaum calls Brian Kelly’s underwhelming season a ‘trainwreck’

Paul Finebaum, rightfully so, has a lot of concerns with Brian Kelly and LSU football right now. The Tigers have now dropped 3 straight – all by 10 points or more – including a rough loss to 5-5 Florida this past Saturday.

Kelly is going backwards in Baton Rouge. He had a strong first season, a slightly less impressive 2nd season and a disastrous 3rd season as far as preseason expectations are concerned.

Finebaum told listeners on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning that Kelly is currently walking directly into a hornet’s nest and that the LSU season has been a “trainwreck from a distance.”

Here are his full comments:

“He simply walked into a hornet’s nest right now because the season is literally on the brink. It looks like a trainwreck from a distance,” Finebaum said. “We’re not there, but everyone now is just going to start piling on him from his own fanbase, which is the worst, to fanbases around the country, especially Notre Dame fans who I think are taking great pleasure in his failings.”

“There’s really no way to sugarcoat a 3-year experience that has not gone particularly well,” he continued. “I’m aware like you are what he did the first year. There’s almost nothing for Brian Kelly to say right now other than to salvage what looks like a really fantastic recruiting class and turn this thing around quickly. Because no one is going to be forgiving for a guy who earns $10 million a year, who has the highest paid assistant coaching staff in the country, who has 4 losses but quite frankly probably should have 6.”

LSU’s 2024 playoff hopes died last week against Alabama, but now it’s time to see if Kelly can close out the year with a pair of wins over Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
