Paul Finebaum is ready for another elite talking season in the SEC, and SEC Media Days get rolling live on Monday morning. That provides a great time for the SEC Network host to reveal some key preview comments on the upcoming season, which he did in a wide-ranging interview with Awful Announcing.

Among the questions in that interview, Finebaum was asked which SEC program might be the team that is overrated entering the season. His final choice was a bit of a surprise, ultimately tabbing Georgia as the team that certain people might be too high on entering the season.

The Bulldogs are coming off another SEC Championship Game victory and trip to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, but they ultimately fell to Notre Dame. Now, Georgia must replace its starting quarterback from the past 2 seasons and other key pieces.

Finebaum believes that puts Georgia in a rare “good but not great” position entering 2025:

“I think Georgia is,” Finebaum admitted. “Kirby Smart was on our show. He said, ‘I wanted to thank you for alerting Gunner Stockton,’ his quarterback, ‘to how little you think of him.’ He was laughing because I had said at the time what I’ve said a few other times. I think Gunner Stockton is not elite. Neither was Stetson Bennett. He won two national championships for Georgia, but Georgia had so many great players on those national title teams.

“They have a lot of good players on this team, but I don’t think they have enough. I think we saw that in the waning moments of the first half against Notre Dame in the early part of the third quarter when Georgia just melted down. They looked about as clueless and as unprepared as I’ve ever seen a Georgia team. I think they’re good. I don’t think they’re great.”

Georgia is just a few years removed from completing back-to-back national championships, and the Bulldogs have still been among the elite programs since, appearing in a New Year’s Six bowl and a CFP appearance in the 2 seasons since their last national title. The program has lost just 5 total games since the start of the 2021 season, but there are more question marks than usual this season.

We’ll see how it all pans out.
