Paul Finebaum says Auburn has a ‘pulse, heartbeat and momentum’ after big recruiting weekend
Paul Finebaum took notice of what Auburn was able to accomplish last weekend on the recruiting trail.
The Tigers flipped a pair of blue-chip prospects — 5-star WR Perry Thompson and 4-star ATH DeMarcus Riddick — from Alabama and Georgia, respectively. Finebaum said Auburn’s momentum is arguably its biggest storyline as it prepares for Year 1 under Hugh Freeze.
“That’s a big deal,” Finebaum said this week on the Matt Barrie show. “Auburn hasn’t flipped a player from those 2 schools in a long time. And they not only have a pulse, they have a heartbeat and they have momentum.
“Hugh Freeze is out there now and he is creating a lot of issues for schools.”
Finebaum did say that Auburn’s first year on the field might be underwhelming compared to its recruiting class due to what Freeze and his staff have inherited.
“He inherited a pretty bad mess,” Finebaum said. “In the SEC, as in a number of leagues, you have 3 or 4 games that are 50/50 jump balls. You might steal 1, you might not. But if you steal 1 or 2, suddenly you look like you’re having a good record.
“What Hugh Freeze has done is create momentum and that’s the most important thing.”
Here’s video of Finebaum’s comments:
Auburn is now up to 14 commits in the class of 2024. Thompson and Riddick are the program’s two highest-ranked recruits as of publication. The group sits at No. 18 nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
Auburn opens the season against UMass on Sept. 2.
