Bill Belichick named Gio Lopez North Carolina’s QB1 ahead of the 2025 season. Before the end of the 3rd quarter, however, Lopez was out of the game due to injury and a former SEC quarterback relieved him.

With 6:51 left in the 3rd quarter, Max Johnson entered the game. The former LSU and Texas A&M quarterback is in Year 6 of his college football career.

As Johnson led the Tar Heel offense on a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, many fans were impressed.

On social media, there are calls for Johnson to be the new QB1 for Belichick’s team:

Johnson transferred to North Carolina ahead of the 2024 season. In last year’s season-opener, Johnson suffered a severe right left injury that led to an extensive rehab.

In 2020, which did not count against his eligibility, Johnson was part of the LSU football team. He played in 6 games that season for the Tigers. Johnson’s first career start came at Florida, leading LSU to a stunning upset over a UF team that was contending for a College Football Playoff spot.

Johnson was LSU’s starter for 12 games in 2021 but opted to enter the transfer portal after the season. He transferred to Texas A&M ahead of 2022, spending 2 season with the Aggies. He played in 12 games at Texas A&M, making 8 starts.
