Ranking college football’s top five environments in Week 3

There were some big games involving SEC teams, but also some very good games nationally. A few top-10 teams went down, and the race for the College Football Playoff is beginning to shake itself out.

Looking back at Saturday’s slate of games, let’s take a trip around the country to the five best environments of week 3:

1. Boston College

Announced attendance at Alumni Stadium for the Eagles’ upset of USC on Saturday night was 41,632. Boston College donned its red bandana uniforms, honoring former BC lacrosse player Welles Crowther who lost his life in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11. The Eagles handed out 6,000 red bandanas to students creating a chilling environment. The win was Boston College’s first against a top-25 team since 2008.

2. South Carolina

A sold-out crowd of 84,232 packed into Williams-Brice Stadium for Georgia at South Carolina. It was the fifth-largest crowd in Williams-Brice history and the crowd braved a weather delay of longer than an hour (they still played 2001: A Space Odyssey, don’t worry) and stayed through a driving rain in the second half. The Gamecocks handed Georgia its third straight loss in Columbia and according to reports, the Sandstorm count neared ten.

3. Oklahoma

A crowd of more than 82,000 packed into Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Saturday night to watch the Sooners welcome the Tennessee Volunteers to Norman. The crowd was reported as being the sixth-largest in stadium history, and the alternating sections of crimson and white made a long night even longer for Butch Jones and the Vols. I’m sure Tennessee fans that traveled to the game were tired of the firing of the ceremonial shotguns (modified 12 gauges) after Sooner touchdowns.

4. Texas Tech

The Red Raiders welcomed Arkansas to Jones AT&T Stadium in one of the bigger non-conference matchups its ever hosted. A crowd of 60,277 saw the Hogs defeat the Red Raiders in impressive fashion, but the buzz in Lubbock was undeniable. Both programs are looking to position themselves in their conferences. Too bad Tech couldn’t get its guns up more often.

5. Florida

A night game at The Swamp is tough. Of course, any trip to Gainesville has been tough for the Wildcats, who haven’t won there since 1979. 88,334 got free football Saturday night as Kentucky took the Gators to triple overtime having plenty of opportunities to spring the upset. A Matt Jones touchdown drive won the game for Will Muschamp and the Gators, keeping the Gator chomp going for just a little while longer.
