Report: Giants had major concerns about Deandre Baker before drafting him

The New York Giants traded back into Round 1 of the 2019 NFL Draft (going from pick No. 37 to No. 30) to select Georgia CB Deandre Baker.
After a rough rookie season, that pick looked questionable. Now, after Baker has surrendered to police and faces some very serious armed robbery allegations, it looks even worse.
According to 1 anonymous source who spoke to the New York Post, it seems the Giants did have some concerns about GM Dave Gettleman taking Baker:
“There was a battle in our building on whether we were going to take DeAndre or not,” a source privy to the Giants’ draft thinking told The Post, “because the story was he had to have his a– kicked every day to work hard at Georgia — to even go to practice. We knew that and we still drafted him, and from Day 1 it was like taking a guy in the first round that you had to teach nearly everything to.”
Of course, things like that are easier to say in hindsight, especially after Baker’s arrest. Were these concerns as serious back in April of 2019? Apparently not, as the Giants still selected him.
Now, we’ll have to wait and see what happens with Baker’s future, as the allegations against him are quite serious.
