Old rivals North Carolina and Georgia will meet for the 2016 opener in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game inside the Georgia Dome, Gary Stokan, president and CEO of Peach Bowl, Inc., told the AJC on Thursday.
It is the SEC’s second major announcement vs. the ACC for opening weekend 2016, joining Mississippi’s battle with Florida State at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
The Tar Heels and Bulldogs haven’t met on the gridiron since the 1971 Gator Bowl, the 30th meeting between the two teams. Georgia last played in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in 2011 against Boise State.
North Carolina opens against another SEC East opponent, South Carolina, in Charlotte this season.
