Ohio State got off to a good start to the season without Urban Meyer on the sidelines — he was suspended for the first three weeks of the season — thanks to the job of interim head coach Ryan Day. According to one report, the job Day did may have just landed him the job in Columbus on a full-time basis.

According to Ari Wasserman of The Athletic, Ohio State is discussing Day as a coach-in-waiting at Ohio State. If accurate, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that Meyer may be on his way out soon than later in Columbus.

Here’s what Wasserman is reporting on the situation:

A person close to the program told The Athletic that senior university officials have begun discussions with Day about a “coach-in-waiting” arrangement, meaning he would be Meyer’s eventual successor as Buckeyes coach. The person spoke on the condition of the anonymity because the discussions are not completed.

Day has never been a head coach until leading the Buckeyes to a 3-0 start to this season. He turned down an opportunity to become Mississippi State’s head coach last offseason. He was also offered the offensive coordinator position with the Tennessee Titans but turned that offer down as well.
