The Miami Dolphins selected Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and will count on him to be the quarterback of the future in South Florida.

However, 37-year-old QB Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t ready to give up his starting job just yet, it seems.

During an interview on “What’s Next with Eric Wood,” Fitzpatrick said he’s excited to have Tagovailoa around, but wants to keep playing this season (via 247Sports):

“I’m really excited. I’m excited that they drafted him, I’m excited ’cause in watching him play at Alabama, he looks like a pretty dynamic talent,” said Fitzpatrick. “Just in meeting him a few times, he seems like an unbelievable kid, great head on his shoulders, says the right things, wants to do the right things. So, for me, I’m his biggest cheerleader right now, but I also want to be out there playing. I also want to be on the field. And that’s why I’m still doing it, because I still enjoy the game.”

The Dolphins have invested a lot in Tua, but they might want to take it slow with him this fall, especially as he continues to recover from a devastating hip injury.

We’ll see what coach Brian Flores wants to do with his quarterback situation soon enough.
